Zoom in/Zoom Out w/ Kit lens noise is recorded why?

    Dear all,

I have been trying to record videos with my nex 6 using the kit len's 16-50mm. When I zoom in and zoom out I hear that the mechanical sound that the lens makes by this action is also recorded!! Is that normal? I think this is terrible that you hear this sound in the recorded videos!

How come they is no way to shield the sound from being recorded?

That's just how the internal mics work. If you want good sound, you need an external microphone anyway.

The problem is a combination of the zoom motor being noisy and the position of the microphones. With some lenses, even the noise of the aperture changing can be picked up by the microphones, so noise isn't confined to the 16-50mm. However, the zoom motor on this lens is very noisy and completely trashes the audio if you zoom while shooting video. To work around the problem you'll either need a different lens or an external microphone.
