This last weekend was my daughter's annual Dance Recital.

The following photos are from the Dress Rehearsal and Dance Recital. I was allowed to come to the Dress Rehearsal if I promised to take photos of all the dancers. Of course I said yes.

Over the 2 day period I took over 8,000 photos. The Recital was 5 hours long (and amazing) and we won't even go into how long the rehearsal was. I got plenty of practice on the A7rii and put my newly acquired FE 85mm 1.8 to good use. I also used my NEX-7 a bit. It made me realize how good of a camera the A7rii is. I'm shooting RAW speed bursts on the A7rii and never once did it slow down. It was a joy to use and the AF-C did a tremendous job. I would guess 95% + of the shots in focus.

Other lenses I used were the 55mm 1.8 and my Minolta 200mm 2.8 Maxxum. I found the ability to switch from Full Frame mode to Crop mode very helpful when composing shots.

The dress rehearsal presented many different challenges and the already tough lighting was made even harder with the main lights and spot lights either completely off or sparingly used. It did make for some interesting contrasty shots with just the secondary lights on.

The lighting is challenging not only because it's not very bright (for the most part) but also the varying colors and spot use of them. I would get skin tones adjusted pretty well only to have one or two dancers with their faces glowing yellow or purple.

    Well done, great images.

It is so easy to end up with grainy, out of focus shots at an event like that.

Fabulous shots.... you did really well to capture so many moments although I don't envy you sifting through 8,000 frames! I love dance and would love to have come :) When you used your continuous af what did you use for the area.... i.e. wide or something else (can't look as I have a manual lens on at the moment and it won't let me get to the right menu!)

Also, did you use manual or did you set a shutter speed?

I'm going to see some flamenco in Spain next week and was wondering what settings to us.... will use the 85mm 1.4 so may just set the shutter speed and leave the iso on auto.

Thanks @christilou@christilou ! When I get home I'll check what AF area I used. I shot 1/800 or 1/1000 sec, f/2.2 to 2.8 and ISO 1000-1600. I did have to bring up exposure in LR on some shots, but not a real issue with this camera. The important thing is getting your shutter speed fast enough.

Went home for lunch and checked my settings.
I used Expand Flexible Spot as my AF area after fiddling around with other options. Worked extremely well for me.

    Lol!

Burst shooting for hours on end will do that.

Chris would have had over 30,000 shots if he was shooting an A9.
