I picked this up for $200 on Ebay. It's in good shape. And produces extremely nice images. If you're looking for a budget telephoto that's nice and sharp and don't mind manual focusing, I'd say this lens or the Canon 80-200mm f/4L are two of the best options. There are very few older zooms that are particularly good, but this one is excellent. It's sharp all the way through its zoom range and its fairly light, too.

As soon as we get a sunny day, I'll be headed out for a fully afternoon wth this lens. In the meantime...

I think you're going to like this lens. I bought mine new in 1995 for my Contax 35mm and it's still my favorite lens to use with my f43 cameras. This lens is like an old friend. It's my go to lens when I know I'll have only one chance at a photo. In fact, I've been thinking of picking up a second one. It's not a large, heavy lens, so it balances very well on small bodies. It has the well known Zeiss contrast, easily better than the Canon FD 100-300mm f5.6L that I own, so it seems to snap into focus even with the LVF1 on the Panasonic GF1. Compared to the Canon, color rendition is very accurate, while the Canon tends to be very cool. The out of focus areas with the Zeiss are very smooth and pleasing. One side note: contrast autofocus can be too slow for reliable focusing on moving subjects, especially when they're moving quickly or the light is low. I find that by taking autofocus out of the equation, even my old tech GF1 becomes very quick and responsive, and the Zeiss makes this easy. I haven't had time to try it with the E-M1 and the A7R yet, but I plan on getting to that soon. Below are a few shots with this lens using my old GF1.

Wow, all three are awesome shots. But I have to say I'm partial to number 3. Is that Discovery, Enterprise or Endeavor riding that 747 carrier?

I am already! And today looks like it might be the great day to spend some time outside with it. I'll also be using it on my μ43 E-M5, so It's awesome to know that it does this well on it. I love this one:

Thanks. That's Discovery on the 747. I made it a point to be there when it was flown in to Dulles to be turned over to the Smithsonian. The train is the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad that runs between Cumberland, MD and Frostburg, MD. It's a beautiful area, especially in the fall. That shot is of their diesel, but they normally run a steam locomotive that we like to chase around photographing. The shot of #734 below is also with the Zeiss. I'm careful not to zoom the lens in conditions like this. Being a push-pull design, it could easily suck in dust and smoke.

A bunch from the beginnings of spring blooms. Spring certainly took its time this year. I still am thoroughly impressed by how sharp this lens at 30 years old. Resolution is super high, but the acutance is a little lower, but the lens responds incredibly well to sharpening in Lightroom before halos start to appear.
