Picked up this very clean copy for $240 on eBay

This one is more of a test of colors and sharpness wide open* and it is processed in Lightroom trying to match the colors of my Canon:

Now that I'm looking at it, I'm sure this was not wide open... too much DOF... must have been 2.8-ish.

Pricey? For an f/1.1.2? Check out prices of MD 50 or 58 f/1.1.2 ;)

After using it for a while I still like it but I can't get around of how tight the focus ring is. It is really a pain. Is there any way loosen it up a little?

If focusing ring feels sticky just focusing it from infinity to near about 100 times may help. In the worst case some of the lubricant may have evaporated (Canon isn't famous for it so I think that it is unprobable). It hasn't probably seen much use in a long time.

It could be age, but my experience with the FDs is they are just not as nice as most all of the other name brand lenses of their era (or before).

Thanks, it is nothing fancy, I bounced a flash into the white ceiling above making sure I flood the thing with light.

So finally I sold it on ebay now the buyer claims that the focus ring won't turn past the 5 meter mark and will return it... :S
I have to figure out how to take the focus ring off and find what is the root cause of the problem... I just can't find a good source of information how to do that.

Many Canon FD primes separate into two helicoids that come together at the focusing ring. If you remove the rubber ring, you'll likely find some screws.

But all this is moving into "do at your own risk" territory.

Wow your experience seems to go against the BIG majority honestly. I personally have tried several legacy brands Rokkor, Pentax, Nikkor and by far FD are my favorites and some can go toe to toe with new expensive glass like the FD 35mm F2 and F2.8 so sorry but you must have been very unlucky getting FD glass in bad shape.

I should have quoted the post before, as my reply was meant to specifically reference focus ring smoothness, and in that context, I'd stand by my statement. I corrected my OP to reflect the missing reference.

Optical performance of FD lenses is excellent.

Just an update on my journey with mine. The estimate came back. 160 for repair... ouch... I thought about it hard but I have that FL covered (nokton 50, Takumar 55, Konica 50, Minolta 50, Canon 50L) so this one is a write-off at this point... :(

So the lens arrived back and I took off the mount which was held by three screws. I have found that something was stuck in between the rear element barrel and the cylindrical hole of the mount where the rear element extends to when focused to infinity. Put it back together (now that took about 2 hours) and it works like new :D
I think it is a design issue that stuff can get inside the lens body if stored without the rear cap and the focus ring set to MFD. I might give a feedback to Canon... oh wait :D :D :D nevermind :p
