Internal focus, smooth and easy. Beautiful balance for hand holding as long as you use fast shutter speeds. Rarely shoot this under 1/1600, but possible at 1/800 while tracking. Generally try and hit ISO 200-400 @ 1/3200 - 1/4000. Always used wide open on the NEX-7.

Manual focus and its really my walk about lens this one.

Yep, quite nice. You've given us some very high quality images. Unfortunately, my pockets aren't deep enough for one of the long range Canon lenses. I've considered getting a 300mm to 500mm lens, but if I do, it will probably be a Rokinon or something similar. Maybe even Vivitar. :)

One possibility is Pentax long telephotos. Pentax wasn't very good with ultra teles but it shows in price. Very far from those Canon ones:

How are you able to nail the perfect focus on moving targets like that? Is it the EVF that allows you to see when is in perfect focus coupled with focus peaking?

Funny I get asked that a lot. Some say its just flukes and some say its easy now and again but not consistently. I generally just ignore them now and just carry on :)

Here's a few more shots in a tracking series I set up.......

    MF tracking NEX-7 Canon-FD 500 F/4.5L

Focus peaking is a big help, so is the NEX-7's sensor, not perfect, but I like it. The EVF is excellent in the NEX-7 IMO and really suits what I want. The 7 was a very careful purchase with these lenses in mind with no added optics in the adaptors. The lenses all have internal focus which is fast and smooth. This lens, the 500 F/4.5L, is fantastic to use, but others seem to find it difficult.

We never had AF in the 70's or 80's, so it just seems natural. MF lenses is all I own, so I don't have a lot of choice ;). I have no interest in AF, its the challenge I love, of course most don't, LOL.

All the best and its just a habit at the end of the day.

    Danny.

I'm thinking the EVF must make a big difference . . . sometimes I have trouble tracking fast moving objects in the LCD of my 5R.
