Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Calton Hill is one of the 12 hills in and around Edinburgh. It is situated in the middle of this marvellous city, right between Old Town and New Town. What makes it photographically interesting are the monuments scattered on it.

First a view from the opposite Salisbury Crags, in the middle you can see the Scottish Parliament, but in the background on the left, in the shadows – there's Calton Hill.

One of the most prominent features – and seen from far away – is the never completely built National Monument of Scotland, which was left unfinished in 1829. If you love backlight, visit it in the morning.

Next to it Nelson Monument (finished 1815), a tall tower to commemorate Vice Admiral Nelson.

On the back of the hill there is a smaller installation, a small tower, about 3m in height with a fire bowl on top, which is the Monument to Scottish Parliament:

Recently renovated and reopened this year (2019) is the Playfair Observatory. They did a great job restoring these old buildings...
Here's the main building on the left with the Playfair Monument on the right.

City Dome on the same ground:

So evening draws near, the sky is cloudy (in a nice way!) and you can catch a really great view over the 3 bridges over the Firth of Forth.

This wide-angle shot also overlooks New Town and Leith to the right, but you can see that the sun is moving towards me... (continued in a bit)

Another landmark, one of those Kodak photo points , where tourists crowd, and which is depicted on many (all?) postcards of Edinburgh is the Dugald Stewart Momument with this great view over the city, Old Town, Castle, Balmoral Hotel and the lot. Best taken in the evening when the sun hits the building in just the right angle:

That shot above was taken on a previous trip, 2017, and was up until now my best shot. But you remember my comment above, that the sun was over the bridges and was coming towards me. So I hurried to that famous spot, set up my tripod and waited patiently – and was rewarded with this:

Looking forward to your pictures from Calton Hill. You also might want to find Jacob's Ladder which leads from Calton Hill to Waverly Station.
