While our recent unexpected expenses have left me truly unable to splurge for awhile on any serious photo gear, I do find myself somewhat anxious to plug a gap in my lens collection... a telephoto of more than 210mm (that's not also a bulky f/10 telescope). And roundball's increasingly excellent bird shots have been a true inspiration. But I'm afraid I can't afford something like his Canon FD 400/4. So I've been eyeing some Minolta MC/MD 300mm telephotos, mostly the MD 300/4.5, since I already have adapters for Minoltas. However, copies of those 300/4.5s seem to be somewhat rare and over US$100, which is more than I can likely justify to the household Finance Committee of One.

But then I saw some info on a Minolta MD Tele-Rokkor 300 f/5.6... and for under $100. So, my question to you all is whether anyone has any experience with the MD 300/5.6 and if so, how it might compare to the 300/4.5 models.

And if there are any other recommendations for a good legacy 300mm that might be had for under US$100, those ideas are welcome too.

    Thanks all.

    Comparison of Tamron 18-200, Minolta MD Tele-Rokkor-X 300mm F 5,6 and Minolta 500RF on NEX-7

I sold the 300 and kind of regret it but i now have 2 X 4.5's ( MC-Rokkor-X that has huge AC and is very prone to flare due to hood being probably too short, newer MD Tele-Rokkor with IF that i just got and had no time to test yet) and rare Vintage Rokkor-QD from about 1965 that i also have not tested much due to work and deep freezing temperatures here these last few months.

Thank you Michel. Good comparison shots, and reassuring as well.

I have Tair 4 (in the funny lens collection), Tamron 54B and Nikon ED 300mm/4.5. If you have car or don't plan to walk a lot around Tair 4 is viable option, Tamron is quite light but does have some CA.

I've got a Nikon 500mm f/8 reflex that I'm dieing to try on either my a600, my a5100 or even my Oly OM-D E-M5 (I). One of its advantages is that it has its own tripod mount and thus does not load the camera lens mount with cantilever shear loads. Adding a 1.4 teleconverter would bring the equivalent to 1050mm for the Sonys and 1400mm for the Oly, but cut the aperture to f/9 or f/10.

Well, I "pulled the trigger" on the Minolta MD Tele Rokkor 300mm f/5.6 today. We'll see how it performs in a few days... assuming the weather cooperates, "April showers" and all.
At $69 it seemed the best value, especially considering that the very limited info I was able to dig up on it was all positive.

I was searching for the ideal 300mm (zoom) for portable shooting. If your Tamron is the 23A, you're not going to find much better.
When I got my SP 60-300 23A, the search was over. Performance is outstanding even compared to primes.

Here is perhaps my best shot with this 300mm lens so far:
Near-Half Moon, today, 4/26/15 at 8:18pm EDT, before sunset...
17096996798_485e7c7847_o. Near Half Moon 4/26/14 (cropped) by SRHawk64, on Flickr
    Minolta MD Tele Rokkor 300mm f/5.6 @ f/11, ISO 400, 1/200. SOOC JPEG, cropped to 1536x1024 for a 100% view.
I notice some CA, which is to be expected with this lens. And it may be a bit soft or otherwise not quite truly focused to infinity... and it was focused all the way to the infinity stop.
But, overall, I'm pleased with this one.

    Is this on a Nex-7 or A7?
I'd be happy if I could get that out of my Nex-7 with my Nikkor 300mm.
    Nice shot.

Neither. MD Tele Rokkor 300/5.6 on my A3000.

Sorry, I didn't see your sig for some reason.
I like the results you're getting.
We've got too much moisture in the air tonight to make it worth while to shoot.
Tomorrow night should be different though.
