I went birding in the backyard again this afternoon. Only got two keepers out of the lot. Practice, I need to practice more.

I was surprised yesterday to see our resident Great Blue Heron, whom I have nicknamed "Alfred the Great," or just "Alfred," standing in a rather unusual pose:

Feeding the babies. All with the 200-600 @ 600mm on the A9. The first is a 2/3rd crop, the rest 3/4th.

Monk Parrots/Parakeets. These are not native to New York but they've find ways to survive. They've been found in various places around NYC. But they make their homes on human structures!

Was about to go pickup food when I see this bird eating off my cone flower. It's ok though, I planted them for butterflies and they didn't bloom well this year. Anyway I digress, so I ran upstairs to get my camera, which didn't have my long lens on, my memory stick in the computer and I'm thinking, he's going to be gone by the time I set this up. To my surprise, he was still there. He/she is an American Gold Finch from what I can tell.

Yes that is a gold finch. We put out thistle seed in feeders specifically to attract them, which they seem to love but I think they will eat many different types of seeds. We often get small groups of them in the late spring or early summer. This time of year they are harder to find and we get far fewer now, but some are still around. The males especially can be spectacularly bright, and despite their diminutive size are quite easy to spot even from a distance. It is one of our favorite birds.

We now have a juvie cormorant in our little lake -- looks as though he's settling in to be a permanent resident, as he's been here several days now. Anyway, I captured this shot a couple of days ago when he went fishing under our pier and came up with a big mouthful:

This Mockingbird waited for me to change lenses, so he deserves this.
