Flock shots rarely work. There's a lot to control and you also need a lot of luck. I'm happy with this one.

Banded Stilts, Avalon, Australia. Notes about this unusual bird below.

These guys feed on coastal wetlands but when ephemeral salt lakes hundreds of kms away start to fill they head off to breed there. It's not known how they know to leave. They can cover up to 1000 kms in a day and they carry up to 50% of their body weight in eggs.
3-4 eggs are laid just in a scrape in the sand.
The briny lakes are full of shrimp that the hatched chicks start to feed on as early as two days old.

Just amazing.

I can imagine people taking one look at that and downloading it for their wallpaper. The only thing preventing me from doing so is that I need soft warm colours for that.

A lot of my shots are taken at a water treatment plant about an hour from home. It's huge, a Ramsar-listed wetland and accessible with a permit.

There's been a Brolga pair there for some years and they fail to raise a chick every season. There's a high density of raptors which may account for it.

But this year they did which is very exciting. Here it is with one of the parents.

Some work on the creative end of the continuum. Black Swans. What do you think?

I like them. My preference is the first, with the two birds in flight, and a cleaner, simpler, but beautiful background.

The light was pretty dull, but a flock of Buffleheads landed on the lake while I was walking by.
