Did not see a thread for this lens and that does not surprise me, given the specialized nature of the lens. I bought mine to use for mostly outdoor portraits in the desert area where I live. I find the compression and background rendering to be excellent. Paired with the Batis 85mm f1.8, these are my main lenses used for portraits. While I mostly shoot the 135mm at f2.8, I do use other focal lengths, such as f4 for this shot.

Here is one at f2.8 where I am about a train car away from the model. Luv how the leading softness of the train car leads your eye to the subject.

When your subject is close, the distant background gets really soft. Those mountains in the background are over a mile away, but the compressions brings them much closer.

This one at about 20 feet from model at f3.5.

For other outside uses I follow the same principle as when shooting models of bringing in the background with compression and softness, which makes the subject pop. I will be shooting most times at f4 or faster, don't think you will ever see me shoot this lens at f11or f16.

And the lens is great for detail and closeups, the OIS really helps on shots like this.

Overall I just love this lens, it is wonderfully sharp, has great rendering, the added OIS is a big help at times, allowing me to shoot at ISO 100 much later into the day. The lens is light enough to carry in my bag full time and uses the same 67mm filter as my 20G, 35GM and Batis 85. And now with the A7RIV, I will use the APS-C crop mode with the Batis 135mm to get a 202mm lens with 26MP results.

Jim... excellent work !
This lens is great indeed and not so heavy as the Sony 135... :)
I got used to have the aperture on the lens itself and that pleases me a lot.
The results you have here are similar to those with the Sony GM
You made a good choice !
Can you shoot at 70cm ?
Congrats !
Thank you Antonio! The results are similar, but of course the Sony has it advantages too. Both being 135mm has a lot to do with how the photos come out, but the background rendering of the Sony may be better because of the f1.8.

The Batis 135mm close focus is 87cm. Something had to give for the weight savings of 615g for the Batis vs 950g for the Sony 135, that being the f2.8 vs 1.8 aperture and the close focus. Both compromises are OK with me, as the smaller size, weight saving, added lens OIS and common filter size of 67mm with my 3 other prime main lenses was more important to me, as I wanted to carry this lens in a 4 lens prime kit. For my outdoor portraits we tend to walk a bit to secluded spots and I wanted this kit to not be a bother weight wise. It all fits very easily into my Mindshift Photocross 13 sling bag and the total weight of the kit with A7RIV, Batis 85 and 135m, 20G and 35GM, Godox V350S flash and 4 filters is only about 3.6kg, which is very a manageable.

Nice shoot Jim! 👍

Were these taken by the Salton Sea? I've always wanted to shoot there myself, but with summer coming I can imagine it'll start getting hot.

In the 1st post the locations are Lucerne Valley, Saltdale and last 2 pics near Joshua Tree NP.

The 2nd post is the Salton Sea, the door is located at Bombay Beach. The decorative RV is in Slab City, just past Salvation Mtn., and both of these sites are on the Eastern side of the Salton Sea. It does get hot there, and next month it will pretty much be 100F+ during the day until late Sept or early October.

Here is a link to a few shots from a model shoot at Bombay Beach, where I was testing out a new Batis 85 f1.8 lens. There are now about 10 buildings in BB decorated up as "museums" and very photogenic, especially with a model. Think you would like it, lots of very interesting graffiti, posters and hand painted artwork on and in many of the buildings.
