These are some shots I took with the lens plus the Canon 500D close-up lens. I have this close-up lens for a long time, used it with my Canon zoom a few years back, very good results then, very good results now. IMO, unless you need to go to 1x reproduction ratio, combining a 70-200 zoom with such a high quality close-up lens, is a very good option. The reproduction ratio at 200mm must be around 0.25x, which is pretty good for a lot of nature subjects.

And the filter thread is 72mm, which matches the one on the lens, another bonus. Old Canon literature explains that the "D" stands for double element, helping in correcting aberrations. Anyway, the results are quite good, and could save you a dedicated macro lens.

    Very nice.

I have had a few lenses labeled macro lenses from the 70's that are quite enjoyable, even if not true 1:1 Macro's.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I should clarify that the shots were taken with a combination of the FE-70-200 lens plus the Canon 500D close-up lens. The lens by itself does not give this high magnification (about 1/2 life size at 200mm).

Well, nothing special really. Here is a pic of the Canon 500D close up lens. It is just a filter after all... the pic is for the 58mm size, I have the 72mm one.

old thread this but very interesting given I was thinking of the same combo by buying the 70-200 f4 and fitting my old and unused 72mm closeup sigma screw in lens.

    current thread 70-200 f4 @90 mm vs 90mm macro at f4
