    They need that something to make them stand out a little IMO - like adding some contrast and/or clarity maybe?

    I really like the way #1 is composed. The geometry catches my eye. Somehow I do not mind the "dullness" in #1. The other two perhaps need a little more oomph. The action in #3 is great. It looks like you spent your few minutes before work very wisely.

    The first "dull" #1 apparently attached itself to my brain as the Classic. So I prefer "dull" #1. It reminds me of the B&W from the old days, I guess. But the extra oomph on the lamp and the running girl look better to me than the originals.
