On other cameras I've always had the options to
    1. Continally change focus as the camera moves and
    2. Focus only when I push the button half way
The a7ii with the 50mm f1.8 FE lens seems to change focus no matter what mode I have it in. How can I make it so it will not be annoyingly noisy and only focus when I tell it to by half-pressing the shutter? Thank you.

Have you tried setting your focus mode to AF-S (Single-shot)? It sounds like you may have it set to AF-C (Continuous). Also, you may want to check if Pre-AF is off, and AF w/shutter is on.

Sound like you have pre-AF on, which means the camera will focus the lens approximately correctly when the camera is on, regardless of whether your hand is anywhere near the shutter (or other focus activating) button. The idea is to make final focusing faster because the image is closer to being in focus at all times.

I personally don’t like the behavior either on my A7 series bodies so I turn it off.

Ahh, okay, I have it set to AFS but I didn't know about the pre-focus thing. This is my first time using an autofocus lens. The 24-70 came with the camera but I took one picture with it and took it off. Some of these new lenses are so big!
