I'm in an undecided decision and require some help.

Currently, the Sony HVL-20M flash has been newly listed on Craigslist for $110 in like new condition.
Also, the SEL 50mm f/1.8 is available for $200 shipped from a private seller.

    Which one should I get?

I need to act on either one of these fast and need a quick reply for help.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure how we can help, dragion. Which one do you think you'd use more? Why not get both? I know that I'd get the lens, but that's because I hardly ever use a flash. So... How's that for help? :p

    Thanks for your advice.

Based on my current collections of lenses, will the 50mm be a better fit then to get the external flash?
The A6000 does have a built in flash with "bounce" ability, but is it good enough?

I don't use flash very often either, but would like to have one just in case.

Since I have the 35mm f/1.8, I'm not too sure how much use the 50mm f/1.8 will be used.
If I didn't own the 35mm then it would be a no brainer.

Both items will probably be used on occasion.

Budget is limited, so getting both isn't possible.

    SEL50F18: $299 retail
    HVL-20M: $148 retail

Craigslist Seller has excepted my offer for $100...should I proceed?

    CONFUSED

Off topic - but how do you 'bounce' with the A6000 built-in? I have the camera in my hand and can't work it out!

Personally I would get the 50mm and save for the big boys 43 flash in the future.

Not the same as the NEX-6? You bounce it by holding it up with your finger on the 6

OK - so you have to hold it for the shot - it doesn't stay in bounce position.

That is why I have "bounce" in quotation...

I think the HVL-43M is a bit large for the A6000...isn't it?
I don't want to spend $398 on a flash which will be used sparingly.

I see you have the kit zoom in your lens line up, why not just go out for a shoot and force yourself just to leave it at 50mm. This might give you a feel for focal length to help you better decide. while im not a big fan of the kit zoom it has its place and will be good for this test for you.

The focal length is not the main concern, but the f/1.8 aperture is...compared to the kit lens's f/5.6.

Im guessing you want the speed for low light and not depth of field due to you also thinking about the flash. I don't think I can offer any more advice since I have very minimal experience with flash sorry.

    I appreciate the feedback.
The 2 items do not go hand in hand and are not relevant to each other...for making my decision.

I feel that either one will be nice to have for my collection.
I just don't know which one will be the best to purchase at this time.

What I'm asking...this is for anyone to answer:
(Please consider based on my already list of gear)

If it was "you" which one would you buy?

"If it were me" I'd buy the 50mm lens cause I'm not much of a flash guy and it would probably sit in the drawer unused most of the time (unlike a lens). I don't know how much help this is though.........:D

If the seller accepted your $100 offer on the 50, you made an easy choice! Can't go wrong there ;)
    Enjoy your new lens!

It was $100 for the HVL-20M flash and $200 for the SEL 50mm f/1.8 lens.

The seller of the 50mm already shipped it out and should receive it on Thursday.
The Craigslist seller for the flash is still determined to sell it to me for the $100 I offered.

I debating if I can swing it and get both...very tight financially at this moment.

Have you had a chance to use the HVL-F20 yet?
I tried one out in the camera store and I lost my initial enthusiasm for it.

    I can't say I have.

I'm interested in it only since it has full TTL ability with the A6000 and due to the size.
I would definitely prefer the HVL-43M instead, but feel that it is too large for the camera...and expensive.

I don't usually use flash...I would only use a flash when necessary.

Can anyone tell me how much "better" the HVL20M is compared to the built in flash on the A6000?
Is it worth the $100 to have?
