OK, I have the kit lens and I have a fixed lens. I also hung the a5100 on a telescope. In each case the camera's zoom control adjusted the zoom (I haven't measured the range yet). In the case of the 16-50 zoom lens, it zoomed from 16 to 50mm (as you would expect), but it also zoomed the fixed lens and even when mounted on the telescope with a T-mount adapter. There has to be some specification for this zoom range in each case, but I have yet to read up on it or figure it out (or measure the non-zoom optics zoom range).

Clear image zoom is 2x. Digital zoom is 2x. Look in your settings menu to see which one (s) you have enabled. I am not sure which dial you are using to zoom but as you are zooming, you should see 1.2x,1.3x,1.5x all the way to 2x in the display. You will never see mm since the lens focal length is not changing with the exception of the kit power zoom.

Thanks WestOkid. Your "mm" comment is right on the money of course.
