It's been a long cold winter here in Minnesota and the landscape has been rather gray and bleak. Fortunately, Saint Paul has begun their Winter Carnival today for the 125th year. One of the events is the Orchid show at the Como Park Conservatory which opened in 1915. There were many beautiful flowers on display. Here are a few that I thought turned out well.

All photos where taken with a Sony Nex-7 with a manual focus Konica Hexanon 50mm F1.4. Mostly taken at ISO 100, landscape mode, +2 sharpening, +1 Saturation, various F-stop settings between 1.4 and 4.0 and set to aperture priority mode to let the camera set the shutter speed.

#10 - One of my favorites. I love the intense blue color of these flowers.

#12 - This one looked really nice in higher resolution. The filaments along the edges of the flowers where highlighted by the back-lighting.

#18 - This one would have benefited by a little smaller F-stop setting.

#20 - The lighting was just right with this one. It really brought out the detail.

#21 - This red guy looks a little over saturated.

Since the local weather has been rather gloomy of late these are certainly a welcome sight. Thanks for posting these. :)

Very very nice -- #10 in particular is a stunner.

Perfectly composed, focused, and exposed. At macro distance, no little feat. The bokeh also looks very very nice.

I'm surprised the Hexanon 50mm f/1.4 can focus this close.

The minimum focal distance with this lens is 13.5 inches (34 cm). I'm very pleased with the bokeh that this lens gives me compared to the kit lens I was using. These inexpensive prime lenses have really renewed my interest in photography without spending a fortune on E-Mount lenses.

Thanks for the photos. I remember being there with my parents and taking shots with my film camera years ago before the digital age:)
