I did a test like that years ago with one of my own images. As I recall my final image was much worse relative to the first than this article shows. Without going to the hi-res versions, I did not think his degradation was actually that bad. Maybe he was saving each generation in minimal compression or 'high quality' JPEG mode. Or the renderers are much better now.
