Technically it's a trade in, but they let you trade in anything. I mean anything including a disposable camera. They explicitly list that under eligible cameras. Considering you can get disposable cameras at the dollar store for $1, it's effectively $300 off.

So the A7 body ends up being about $1400 after the $300 back. You can also get 5% back in cashback based on the original $1700 price, that's another $85 back. Making the A7 pretty close to $1300. For a just released FF camera, that's a bargain.

Samy's in California has joined the $300 rebate party. Same conditions as Focus. If you don't have a camera to tradein, they'll sell you one for $10. Samy's is also sales tax free until Wednesday. Unlike Focus who credits you later, Samy's does it upfront. The offer is valid in their B&M stores only, not online.

It's clear that the $300 "rebate" is a Sony sponsored promotion. Why doesn't Sony just make it official everywhere?

They only ask for make and model, not condition, so it could be a flat discount. Let us know what they offer!

I would bet it's run exactly the same as all the other discounts since this is most likely a Sony sponsored dealer rebate. Samy was $300 regardless of what you selected for the camera. The terms have been any camera, working or not. So no need to trade in an old $5 film SLR. That's a waste. You can buy a $1 disposable camera at the dollar store and trade that in. If you have to trade in anything at all. Focus credited people's accounts when they shipped solely on the promise that people would eventually send in a camera.
