2X Converter opinions?

With a few wildlife shoots under my belt now, it seems to me that the 1.4X converter on the 100-400GM is amazing, the 2X not so much. I have shots where I'm fairly certain I nailed focus, but the resulting image just isn't as sharp as I'd expect. The 1.4X works like nothing was added to the lens, I love it. I'm thinking the 2x stays in the bag, I'd swear a little more cropping with the 1.4X would result in a better image. This is on either my A7Riii or A9 v2.

I'm still a noob to this wildlife stuff, so I'm looking for others' experiences with these converters, most specifically on the 100-400GM.

Agree on the 1.4 TC - crisp and clean.
Despite the loss of IQ with the 2x TC* I've ordered one. The alternatives also involve compromises.
